2005 Dodge Neon Clicking noise coming from engine area

My car recently started making a clicking noise. it sounds like it is coming from the motor but I'm not sure because at times it sounds louder near the transmission area. The only change in the performance of the car is poor fuel mileage. The noise sounds worse when the car is first started then subsides after driving alittle. Can you help
