2005 Dodge Neon car won't come out of park when brakes are

Transmission problem
2005 Dodge Neon 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

for some reason my car won't come out of park after i start it up and press the brake down.
i know there is a little sensor that activates right next the brake pedal that lets you change gears/take out of park

is there anything else i should consider as being the problem before i replace that part? or is there a way to check it?
