Hello,

Typically an engine can backfire in one of two ways.
Most commonly when unburnt fuel exploders inside the intake manifold crating the lung bang. This can potentially push out gaskets or even damage the intake manifold.

The second kind of backfire happens from the rear of the cars tail pipe, typically due to rich mixture problem.

Backfire can happen for faulty fuel injectors or fuel regulators. If too much fuel gets into the engine not all will be burnt off by the spark plug and the unburnt fuel can ignite.

Many times you will get a check engine light warning with backfire. Is you engine light illuminated? It can help diagnose the reason of the backfire.
