Where is the CAM sensor located on the 04 Neon? I've been having problems with the check engine light coming on and the car not wanting to go above 2200 RPM. After taking it to a local auto parts store they said that the CAM sensor needed replaced. My husband said no problem and bought the part. Now we have no idea where it goes. Any ideas?

2004 Dodge Neon 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

I have a 2004 Dodge Neon SXT,2.0 SOHC, Manual transmition. I have recently been having issues where The car will sputter out when driving, and the check engine light comes on. by sputter I mean, when I go to take off in first gear, I get up to about 2500 RPM, then it sputters like there is no fuel going through the lines. Switch gears, and again about 2500 RPM give or take, and will continue this for each gear. Or when it chooses to work correctly. Lets say I'm doing highway speeds, it will cut out, as if no fuel. let off on the gas, and wait till I'm down to say 30 mph. then kicks back in.

I was assuming maybe something with the fuel pump, or fuel filter. but apparently there is no filter on this car.
Currently the check engine light is off. but I decided to hook it up to the computer and analize through this method.
I came up with 2 codes that say the same thing. Camshaft Position Sensor Interupped.....

I've located the part on the car. but haven't gone any further.

Could you Please advise me as to if this is the problem?

Hi, I have the same exact car that had the same exact problem. It is the camshaft positioning sensor and it either had fluid leaking on it or it needs replacing. Mine needed replacing period. It is a pain in the neck and butt to get to but trust me it will fix the problem.

Also, if you find that the positioning sensor is fine, check the wiring, if any fluid touches the wiring, it's shot.

I have a 2004 Dodge Neon. My engine light came on and I used my diagnostic tool to retrieve the trouble code. I got a P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction. There is no Haynes Repair Manual for this car. Where is the Camshaft Position Sensor located so I can replace it?

a few weeks ago i replace the cmp because a got an check engine light. the scanner said it was the cmp sensor, but now i got another code ( p0344) which says " rationality error detected for intermittent loss of camshaft position sensor" what d u think that could be??? do u think is because i only replaced the cmp senor but not the cmp sensor target magnet??? d u think that i could damage my engine if i dont fix it soon??

This can be because the timing belt is wearing out and let the engine jump tooth or the connector is bad. Here is the location of the sensor and connector. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Engine Performance problem

I gotght the code P0016 and replaced the camshaft sensor and the crankshaft sensor then I went for a test drive and check engine light cam on again now when I read code I have a new one it is P0440 any Iddeas what next and what is new code? Thanks Teri

Remove both cam and crank sensors inspect tone wheels any debris, bent rotate engine to see all of wheel

I just bought this car two days ago and the check engine light came on..... I went to Advanced Auto to have it checked and I was told it was the Camshaft Positioning Sensor. The part is cheep..... and I know a bit about vehicles but I'm not sure about this sensor....... am I able to do this myself??? And if so how??

Not too hard! Just line up the pins in the magnet with the holes in the back of the cam. First pictures are 2.0 After 2.4 instructions are the 2.4 diagrams. CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR Removal & Installation (2.0L) 1. Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor is located on rear of cylinder head. See Fig. 30 . Remove brake booster hose and harness connectors from valve cover and reposition. 2. Disconnect CMP sensor harness connector. Remove CMP sensor mounting screws. Remove CMP sensor. Loosen retaining bolt and remove target magnet mounted to rear of camshaft. See Fig. 31 . 3. To install, line up target magnet with locating dowels in end of camshaft and install retaining bolt. Tighten target magnet retaining bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 4. Install CMP sensor and tighten mounting screws to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Removal (2.4L) The camshaft position sensor is mounted to the rear of the cylinder head. See Fig. 32 . 1. Remove the air cleaner box. See AIR CLEANER HOUSING under AIR INDUCTION SYSTEMS. 2. Disconnect the plastic clip for the wiring harness from the stud on the valve cover. See Fig. 33 . 3. Remove the nut holding the clip for the oil supply line to the turbo and disconnect the fresh air makeup hose from the valve cover. See Fig. 34 . 4. Disconnect electrical connectors from camshaft position sensor. See Fig. 35 . 5. Remove camshaft position sensor mounting screws. Remove sensor. 6. Loosen screw attaching target magnet to rear of camshaft. See Fig. 36 . 7. Remove the camshaft position magnet. See Fig. 37 . Installation 1. Install the camshaft position magnet, make sure that the alignment pins are in the holes. See Fig. 37 . 2. Install target magnet in end of camshaft. See Fig. 36 . Tighten mounting screw to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Over torquing could cause cracks in magnet. If magnet cracks replace it. 3. Install camshaft position sensor and mounting screws. Tighten sensor mounting screws to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 4. Connect electrical connectors to camshaft position sensor. See Fig. 35 . 5. Install the nut holding the clip for the oil supply line to the turbo and disconnect the fresh air makeup hose to the valve cover. See Fig. 34 . 6. Connect the plastic clip for the wiring harness to the stud on the valve cover. See Fig. 33 . 7. Install the air cleaner box. See AIR CLEANER HOUSING under AIR INDUCTION SYSTEMS. 8. Connect the negative battery cable.

How hard is it to change out the camshaft sensor? where is it located ....Also I have a door fuse light on on the odometer...where is the fuse?

Okay any help would be appreciated,problem is car will not start if camshaft sensor IS plugged in.If i unplug the sensor it will run and run pretty good.I have already replaced the cam sensor,crankshaft sensor,knock sensor,and the PCM.No diagnostic codes come up except the cam code,but thats because it is unplugged.there appears to be a little oil in the intake manifold. No dealers no what is wrong with it. If one of the certified mechanics helps and it actually works i will donate at least $40. iI and everybody i know are completly stumped. PLEASE someone HELP!!

This is a toughie! After replacing all those parts and still having a problem i would say you have a electrical problem in the wiring harness. Pull back the tape and covering especially right there where the wiring comes out of the harness that goes to the camshaft sensor. Neons are bad for worn open wires in that part of the harness. You may have a burned or worn wire causing the car to run when disconnected then once plugged in it shorts out making not able to start. Also check the plug going into the camshaft sensor for damages as well. make sure there are no prongs damaged or any problems that could cause a short as well. My best guess is you have a wiring problem. Hope this gets you in the right direction. MORT

thanks for the reply, there is some messed up looking wiring near the sensor and looks like the previous owner might of done something to the wires around the area, im going to try and see if i can find a whole new wiring harness at a junkyard

Make sure you get the right year harness because the fuel injection plugs and some of the transmission plugs wil be different from year to year. Goodluck! Glad i could help out.

I would check timing belt and marks
also use a scanner and check data
looking for if the cam and crank in SYNC
See if crank and came is out of SYNC
PCM will not open the injectors or will flood the engine
when CAM sensor is disconnected the PCM will go in to limp mode
allowing engine to start

when Disconnecting the CAM sensor and engine start believe it or not that is a sign of the CAM and Crank sensor are in a good condition and working fine

check that timing we have seen it and fix it many times over and over

timing is one thing i havent checked because its a pain in the with aneon. i pretty much checked all those other things, but how do u check if cam and crank are in snyc? cause i was thinking that and my buddy told me that all u do is unplug battery for awhile and have ignition on,then turn ignition off, hook battery back up ,turn key three times,wait bout' 15 minutes then without turning key off try to start,but it did seem tto do anything,he said it relearns itself,is that right thanks

Timing is the problem in this case
to check if cam and crank are in SYNC
I use a scanner tool
simple hooking up the scanner to OBDII
read data look for the cam and crank if in sync

it not a matter of reprogramming or relearning
