Transmission problem
2003 Dodge Neon Two Wheel Drive Automatic 80,000 miles

i got my transmission fluid changed last week(should of gotten done sooner) b/c it wouldn't go into gear, drifted back when I put in drive and was changing gears roughly. When I go into 1st gear it makes a loud noise and goes into first with a jerk. do you think my transmission is shot? a couple years ago I used to take it to the dealer for maintence and the last time I was there for a transmission fluid change they forgot to put the transmission fluid in!! the same symptoms happened so I don't know if they caused the initial problem and its getting worse or if I did it by waiting too long to get it changed. someone said to check the clutches underneath? could you tell me what I should do and about how much its going to cost? thank you!!

There are alot of probable causes for this problem but since you had the fluid changed the one you should be most concerned with is the fluid level. Two things to look for one being the level is full the next is the condition of the fluid. You had it changed for a reason was it dark colored and smell burnt. Since the change has it changed darker what does it smell like is it burnt? These are signs of bad clutches which of course means the transmission is shot. There is no way to check the clutches without disassembling the transmission, take it to a reputable transmission shop and have them test drive it and have a look at it.
Hope this helps MORT
