Hello,

I have a 2002 Neon that was driven about 100 miles daily. One day I heard a loud "clunk" and the stopped to see what was wrong. The vehicle shifted into reverse one time but will not longer shift into reverse. In order to get it home I drove it about 15 miles at 50 mph, but it didn't seem to shift into high as the engine ran at about 4000 rpm the whole time.

I was wondering what the diagnosis would be. I haven't taken it in anywhere or looked at it myself too much. I was hoping it was just something in the shift linkage, but I expect it's a transmission problem. Thanks in advance.

If your transmission is picking up a fault it will go into protection mode, no overdrive. This may just be a solenoid pack or sensor. It could also be something more serious like a pressure problem though. I suggest having a transmission shop take a look at it. They should be able to run tests on it for about $50 depending on shop and location. Driving vehicle in this condition for a long period of time will cause serious damage. Diagnosis is a small price to pay comparing to a new or rebuilt tranny.
