2001 dodge neon trouble starting

my 2001 neon has recently had trouble starting. i will try and try and all of the sudden it will start. when i turn the key there is no clicking or engine trying to turn over. it just makes a low humming noise for about 5 seconds. the car has about 80,000 miles on it. any help would be greatly appreciated

Let me see if I have this right. By try and try you mean that you turn the key and nothing happens but the humming sound for about 5 seconds and then the starter engages and the vehicle starts? If this is the case, the starter is failing.
