Brakes problem
2000 Dodge Neon 4 cyl Automatic 48,520 miles

After it rains the next morning my driver side rear tire locks up. I have to try to back and brake a few times to re-adjust my brakes then the car drives fine (until it rains again) what would cause this?
Thank you for your time.

Brake linings contain metallic particles to help dissipate heat. That metal is rusting to the brake drums. If this occurs after driving through puddles, there could be a rubber plug missing from the inspection holes in the backing plates. If it rains while the car sits undriven for many days, the humidity could cause the rust. More commonly, that will cause the wheel to lock up easily when you apply the brakes for the first time of the day, but they will release without problem.

A less common cause of easy lockup is weak shoe return springs. Most do-it-yourselfers just replace shoes when performing a brake job, but professionals usually will replace the springs and other hardware too.

Locking up solidly suggests one of the shoes is too close to the drum. The most common cause is a sticking parking brake cable that doesn't fully release. Next time this happens, try flexing the cable / casing assembly just in front of the wheel. If the brake releases, the cable should be replaced.

Hey KSTEELE26,

Try hitting reverse to see if you can get the wheels to break loose.

Here is something to look at so you can see whats going on.

check brakes and rear wheel bearing, caliper or parking brake may be doing it or a bad wheel bearing.

My car has been sitting for about a little over 3 months, and when I went to drive it today for the first time since I parked, I found that back passenger side tire won't turn, how do I remedy this?

Its locked-up you need to go behind the backing plate and go thru the inspection hole to contract the brake adjuster-you best bet is to remove the drum and inspect it-

The metallic brake linings have rusted to the brake drum from humidity in the air. You'll have to just keep working it back and forth until it releases. Pump the brake pedal while trying to move slowly on blacktop or concrete, not on dirt or gravel.

I own a 2001 Dodge neon. 4 cylinder 2.0 liter. I was heading to school this morning and was backing out of my driveway perfectly fine when all of a sudden my car did a little jolt and it was acting like it was stuck. When I hit the gas more the car would move but it was dragging. I had my sister get out of the car and I tried again. The rest of my wheels (both front wheels and the left back wheel) move and work but the right one is locked up. My question is what could possible be wrong? And what are the causes?

I figured out what mine was! It was the break pads! They were the original set and the pad part just completely fell off as soon as we got the drum off (which took forever since the breaks were locked)

MAKE IT YOUR SPARE CAR!

GET TWO RELIABLE VEHICLES LIKE MY TWO DAILY DRIVERS

THEY LAST FOREVER!

1977 AND 1946

I LOOKED FOR "RIVETED" LININGS FOR 'LIL RED, I COULD NOT FIND ANY, SO I HAD TO GO BACK WITH THE GLUED ON ONES. MAYBE YOU CAN FIND SOME FOR YOUR RIG

Brakes problem
2004 Dodge Neon 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 88000 miles

I was baking out of my driveway this morning and my rear drivers side tire locked up. I can go forward but it feels like the brakes are on. What may cause this, and is it ok to drive a few blocks to the mechanic or do I need to have it towed?

Drive it a few blocks but preferably not on the highway. Be sure the parking brake is fully released. Typically a rear drum brake will drag due to a rusted / sticking parking brake cable. You can try flexing the cables where they go into the back side of the wheels. If one snaps free allowing the wheel to turn freely, that cable should be replaced. Lubricating them is never a permanent solution.

If the wheel is still locked up after the brake was released, the cable is sticking and should be replaced. Often flexing the casing in front of the wheel will release a sticking cable.

Tires and Wheels problem
2001 Dodge Neon 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I got in my car this morning after not driving all weekend and I was unable to back up or move forward. The car runs fine, and it seems like the back right rear tire was locking up for some reason. Any ideas of what this problem could be?

Hello. I have a 2002 Dodge Neon SXT. The problem that I am having has occured about 3 times in the past year and always happens like this:
I reverse out of my parking space and put the car in drive. I drive (slowly) for a few seconds and all of a sudden the wheels seem to lock up. The car feels like it is being dragged and leaves skid marks on both sides. If I stop and try to drive, it continues to drag, but then leaves skid marks only on the left side. It feels like the left back wheel. I have to put the car in reverse and then it will drive normal. The brake light on the dash does not go on, and i never use my parking brake. Brakes have been checked, I've had new tires put on since the first time this has happened. I don't know if relevant, but when this happens & I put the car from park to reverse, the car "jumps". If you have any advice or ideas I would so much appreciate it. THANK YOU! :)
