Recently, I've been hearing a loud, annoying squeking noise everytime I break. My mechanic checked all my break pads and they're all still ok...about 75% he says. He changed the timing belt and told me we need to change the belt tensioner. So, is the sound coming from the "dysfunctional" tensioner? Unfortunately, we haven't found a mechanical belt tensioner except from the dealer which is obviously overpriced. Another mechanic told me it doesn't need to be changed. Now, I'm confused. By the way, my neon is a chrysler if that's significant at all.

Hi there,

Just get the rotors machined, this will normally rectify any brake squeal, if the noise is only when breaking, it wont be the belt tensioner.

Hi there,

I would be checking the pads are not glazed up, do they look super smooth & have a glassy look & feel about them. If so replace or have them roughed up on a white wheel. Do you know if a cheep pad was fitted last time, as this maybe the root cause of all your problems.
