1998 Dodge Intrepid R&R Brake Booster & Follow on M

Booster failure is extremely rare except on some GM cars. What is the symptom?

The brakes were dragging and there was a vaccum leak coming from the booster. During my research I found ti was a common problem with the Intrepid of it's age.

I figured it out on my own, I will post the steps in a little bit for anyone else wanting to know.

I completed this with a little observation and planning. I called around and found out as long as you don't disconnect the line from the MC you don't have to bleed your brakes.

1. Remove the windshield wiper arms
2. Remove the plastic faring in front of the windshield
3. Remove the 5 bolts holding the metal piece the faring is screwed to
4. Remove the nut holding the linkage to the wiper motor
5. Disconnect the wire connected to the side of the master cylinder
6. Remove the 2ea nuts holding the MC to the brake booster & pull out of the way leave the brake lines connected, they are flex lines so you have a good amount of movement
7. Remove the vaccum line from the fitting on the brake booster
8. Remove the clip that holds the brake booster rod to the pedal
9. Remove the four bolts holding the brake booster to the fire wall
10. Strategically remove the booster from the engine compartment
11. Figure out a way to take a measurement of the push rod protruding from the BB and write it down
12. When you get your new booster set the rod length to match

Reinstall in reverse order

Interesting. I've never heard of this before. How did you diagnose it as a booster problem? Did you hear a hissing sound? What did the brake pedal feel like? Are you aware of any way to tell if the replacement booster is ok before you install it?
