1996 Dodge Intrepid rumbling sound at high speed

Transmission problem
1996 Dodge Intrepid 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 155K miles

I have always had sort of hard shifting with my 96 intrepid transmission but recently at going high speeds on the highway. over 60 mph, i hear an annoying rumbling sound... almost sounds like i should be going twice as fast to hear such a noise. Odd thing is when the highway curves left and I drive along the curve. THE NOISE STOPS. Just weird. I had a trans mount replaced on it a couple years ago...

Hi:

IT sounds like a wheel bearing. Does the noise get louder when you turn right? If so, have the bearings checked on the driver's side.

Let me know what you find.

It is not a wheel bearing. Just recently I had a couple of people in my car (not together). One said to me.."Is that your muffler?" and the other person said "When was the last time you your oil changed?" For the record my muffler is fine and I get my oil changed regularly. It does sound like it is coming from under the hood and I am convinced its the trans... but one can never be too sure with cars. They are puzzles. Some easier to solve than others.

Are you sure about the bearing? Based on your first post, when you are turning left, the noise stops. When going left, the weight comes off the left wheel bearing and usually causes a bad one to quiet. Also, have you checked motor mounts and the trans mount again?

Bear with me. It's hard to diagnose a noise via the internet.

This is interesting because I thought about this too. I have had a new trans mount put in about 2 years ago. ALSO, I had a new engine cradle put in less than a year ago. I bought this car used and whomever had it before me must've done a dukes of hazard jump in it. I am thinking that something isn't screwed down correctly.
