1996 Dodge Intrepid Front Wheel Drive Automatic 167200 miles

I have a 96 Dodge Intrepid and my check engine light has been on since early November of 2009. Yesterday, it began to flash on and off and my car began shaking more than it ever has in the past. How big of a problem can this be and what can be done to fix this?
