I replaced a water pump that was leaking from the weep hole with a (supposedly) new pump and new thermostat. filled the system with regular water to check for leaks and operation. drove about a mile at a slow speed. The water had gotten so hot that it was boiling in the reservoir and appeared to be back flushing through the reservoir filler, car was also smoking. The new pump was also leaking from the weep holes.

Can you explain if there was an error in installation or was it an defective part?

Could be a defective part, have seen it before. If there was straight water in the cooling system it could very easily boil over, needs some coolant to keep that from happening
