for fuel pump and/or filter removal, you will have to remove the fuel tank. Here are two guides to help you step by step.

you could but it's more trouble in the end, probably take longer to do this than replace the stock fuel pump. would have to find a fuel pump that not only pushes but also pulls, since it would have to pull fuel from the tank into the pump and then push it onward, all of this having to be done at a specific fuel pressure also. you would also have to relocate all of the fuel pump wiring.

I Just replaced my fuel pump and now it cranks but after running for 20 mins or more. When I turn my durango off it just turns over but doesn't crank. Go back next morning my durango cranks again. Then after 20mins or more of running my Durango will not crank?

car will periodically not start but is not a starter issue, that has been replaced recently - we don't think it is bad gas but for the past 4 days, the car would not start and then this morning, it started immediately and ran fine. This same thing happened 2 weeks ago, one minute it was running fine - then turned it off and when attempted to start again, it wouldn't and then a couple of days later - it was fine. does that sound like fuel pump? Car also has new battery.

could be..next time won't start try knocking on the fuel tank. this will jar the fuel pump and if pump is faulty , this will almost always cause the pump to start again.

Next time it happens-don't wait for nothing-do below to determine if its fuel or spark issue.

Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it

You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

Yeah they are pricy..I prefer to use the oem brand on them. they have the regualtor, pump and sending unit all rolled into one.

Unknown factors will be the strap and line issues.

Independents use differnent pricing matrixs, talk to them about the cost first.

How do you know for sure if you need a fuel pump? Do you know a fair price for the cost?

Thank you for your quick response. It cranks about 4-5 times in the morning. It is at the dealer and they are thinking the fuel pump. I have the small V-8 - 5.9. 2WD. They are suppose to do a diagnostic test, but can't find the problem yet.

Good Morning Saturntech9, well I found out yesterday that they did check the pressure, and it is the fuel pump. Could it possibly be anything else? It is only does the problem in the morning. Any advice where I could get it repaired at a reasonable price? The dealer charges a crazy amount. Thanks again!

I am wondering how you diagnose a fuel pump. My fuel pump in my durango doesnt make any noise when its cold but when it warms up it makes a loud noise(kinda like a humming noise). The other day my wife said that everytime she let off the gas it would die out. No check engine light ever came on. It was very cold that day and she was at a quarter of a tank. We where told that before the fuel pump goes out it will make noises. Also is it possible that because she was she low on gas that there could of been some condensation in the tank and that could of caused the stall out? If not how do i go about replacing the fuel pump?

yes if there is water in the tank it can be sucked up when the tank is ran low.

but other then that i dont think it would cause the car to stall out if the accelerator wasnt being depressed.

when you say that the pump is quiet when cold but gets loud when its been ran a while then it sounds to me like your pumping is showing its age, to check to be sure you would have to perform a fuel pressure test on the fuel rail.

to change the pump the tank has to be droped by disconnecting the fuel fill hose and then putting a jack under then tank and loosening the straps then disconnecting the hoses and wires and then dropping it the rest of the way.

My 2000 Durango always has a hum in the back from the fuel pump. Cold or hot. It's always struck me as a little noisey, but it's never been a problem in about 125,000 miles.

The dieing at idle sounds to me like an idle validation issue in the tps. I've seen other Dodges have tps problems and not set codes.

The other option would be that the pump is dieing and dropping pressure. However, that should cause a problem under acceleration, not at idle. Note: the pump uses fuel for cooling, so it's possible that fuel level could cause the pump issue. (GM trucks have the problem and are notorious for the pump dieing due to cooling issues.)

You mentioned water in the fuel. While this can shut the engine down, it will normally misfire and generally run bad before that happens.

If you are referring to an Inertia "collision" switch, it doesn't have one. That is a Ford feature.
