My totally stock Dakota with a 4.7 auto makes a bizarre noise while cruising at speeds in the 40-50mph area. It only happens at that speed while cruising and if I hit the gas and it shifts down it stops. Also if I simply let go of the gas, the sound stops too. Its done it since I bought it and during this time it hasnt changed at all. It like a whistle almost, but its not really high pitched. Its coming from the engine compartment area.

Is it that speed or a certain RPM? If it is speed and you are sure it is from the front end, I would say check the front wheel bearings.

Check the RPM's when it happens, and see if you can get it to make that noise at a different speed at the same RPM.

Let me know.

Well I don't think it would be a wheel bearing because when I stomp on the gas and it shifts the noise goes away even if I still am in that 40-50 mph range. It happens when it's at a lower rpm like in the 1000-1500 range.

It sounds like I said. Something internal in the trans. I wouldn't think it is something to worry about. I hate to say it, but this sounds like one of those problems that will require you to wait until it gets bad enough to find.

But if it is the trans, wouldnt it make the noise if I was going down a hill or something because the RPMs are still in that area. Im pretty sure that by the time I reach the 40-50mph area I am in the highest gear, which would be 5th so I would think that going down a hill slowly in 5th with the same RPMs would do it too??

Without hearing it, it is hard for me. However, if you think about it, there wouldn't be as much pressure on the trans.
