truck starts to run hot and heater is blowing out cold air. replaced thermostat about 2 months ago. this does not happen all the time.

That is where I would start. If you replaced the t-stat, something must be blocking the coolant from circulating. At least have it checked by a mechanic to see if that appears to be the problem or check the radiator for circulation yourself. If you need directions, let me know.
