2000 Dodge Dakota Nasty squeeling

When I run my Air Conditioning a really nasty noise is emitted from under the hood, you know that car that squeels down the road as you pass and you look in shame? That's the noise it's making, only when the A/C is in use. Could thei be just a bad pully or is it something more concrete?

if it's only when the compressor is on, then it's when the belt is under extra load.

could be the belt slipping.
could the the tensioner pulley bearing
could be the compressor itself.

is the AC cold out of the vents?

Yes the Air is as cold as can be, I know for sure the belt is not slipping I tightened it about a week ago. Might be one of the other two things you suggested though. . .

if it was the tensioner you would probably still hear it, ever so slightly, all the time.

so let's lean towards the compressor.
look under the hood and have a helper turn on the AC while you watch the compressor.

does the noise start the very moment the compressor engages? or does it take 10 or so seconds?

I did a best out of ten deal; Twice the noise started immediately and Eight time it took under Six seconds to be heard. . .

what are your senses telling you.
does it sound like it's coming from the compressor?

if so does like like it's coming from the outside of the compressor around the pulley area, or more like it's internal of the compressor?

Well, I replaced the belt as it was in need of it. Along the way I found out my tensioner spring was ceased, lubed er' up, belt tightened and Z squeel is gone. . . for now! Although I still think there is a problem with the compressor, may be rust build-up? If so, how costly will a repair be?
