recently in am very slight engine knock sounded like quiet lifter.... by afternoon, very prominent and noisy lifter type knock.... found broken timing chain tensioner and fixed with all new parts, dropped pan, cleaned, still same noise...removed distributor, turned oil pump with screw driver, noisey, but pumps fine... could knock be wristpin or other ? all gauges read normal ...does this 2.5 4-cyl, have a typical engine problem that is terminal ? thanks, frank..... Does the sound come from the top or the bottom end of the engine? Also, even with the noise, how is the engine running.

As far as the 2,5L they are a solid engine. My concern with this type of mileage is you may have a cam lobe that is gone. That is why I asked how it is running. As far as a wrist pin, it could be. THat noise is most prominent if you rev the engine to like 2K RPM's and then just touch the throttle to keep it there. It should be louder.

Let me know.

the engine starts/runs fine all the time, no change....mpg still 22.5...... best before the knock was 23.5...... the knock's volume doesn't change through rpm range, but of course it does have that repiticious typical consistant"lifter sound" that correlates with the rpm ranges, that begins as soon as i start it, and stays...oil pressure has always been a little lower at idle only .......my auto repair guy says noise seems to be comming from the lower side of the engine........upon removal of the valve cover, all visible upper internals / oil look immaculate.... he used stethoscope on head above each cyl. and lifter/ valve area, and heard no prominent noise difference between any of the lifters/valve train, but did mention he thought noise was generated somewhere lower... he also said (like you guyz) that the 2.5 was a stout unit no typ. problems.... still trying to figure it out before monday pm, as then have to decide on a long block...he for some reason is going to try the new oil pump, as that is the only noisey source... let me know if this helps you pinpoint anything, thanks, frank
