1992 Dodge Dakota Engine Idle Problems

Ok is the check engine light on? If so call around and see if any of the parts stores in your area do a free scan and get me the codes. Other then that have you checked for any vacuum leaks any where? Get back to me and we will go from there.

I have replaced all the vacum hoses and the check engine light is not on. My sister has run a diagnositc using a scanning device. I am at a lose as to the problem.

Ok lets check the idle air control motor and see if it is working right. What I need you to do is remove the idle speed control motor and then plug it back into the wiring harness and turn the key on engine off and see if the tip of the motor goes in and out. If it does not move then that is your problem the motor is no good. Let me know what you find and we will go from there ok.

I will give that a try when I get home but that motor was replaced twice. The first one was aftermarket and the one that is in there now is a factory replacement. Could something be wrong with the housing it bolts into?

Not usually but look to make sure and clean it out too before putting the IAC back in. You have checked the coolant temp sensor for the computer? If not then unplug it when it is cold and measure ohms of resistance across the terms of the sensor not the wiring harness and get back to me with the reading and the temp at the time, if you test it cold then air temp will be fine.

I will do this this week. Not sure how to check the computer but will get with my sister on that. Also will check to see if the hole is clean.

Ok that works fine. As for checking the computer we can check the power inputs and grounds as I do have wiring diagrams to help walk you and your sister thru that if needed ok. Have you checked the ohms of resistance on the coolant temp sensor? If not when it is cold unplug the coolant temp sensor and check ohms of resistance across the terms on the sensor and get back to me with the resistance and the temp at the time (air temp will be fine if you test it cold). Get back to me and we will go from there.
