When replacing front shocks on a 1990 dodge dakota, if the top nut is too hard, wont come loose and keeps on spinning what can i do to hold it in place so i can unscrew it?

There should be a hex head at the top of where it mounts. Using an open end wrench on the nut and holding that top nut, are you able to remove it? If not, remove all the weight off the wheel so the shock opens up the entire way. You should be able to see the steel shaft between the top cover and the bottom. Try holding it with vice-grips.

Let me know if this helps.
