my 88 dakota is having an extreme loss of power at random times. ive checked egr, evap, ignition, timing, injection, computer, and other various components. what could be a likely cause?

My 89 Dakota suddenly lost power above about 40 MPH..couldn't hardly climb a hill or pull my boat. A real pro found a small leak in one of the vacuum hoses to the computer. He also said a timing light will not work in this situation. Thought this might give you some ideas.
