Transmission problem
2000 Dodge Caravan Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Our '00 Dodge Grand Caravan (200 K mi) has developed a high pitched whine when it starts up. When you rev the engine, the noise gets louder and higher. Until recently, the whine quit once the engine warmed up, but now it lasts much longer.

Last week, my mechanic said a new alternator ($450 parts and labor) would fix it. It didn't. Now he says it is the torque converter.

Do you think he is right this time?

Noises are not very easy to locate. Although the torque converter was noisey at times, I would use a stethescope to transfer this noise to my ear by touching near the area. The alternator may have been noisey also. If the whining noise changes when you turn the steering wheel it may be the power steering pump. Of the many transmissions I have looked at, the torque converter whining was never the reason. That is a big job. Get a second opinion. Its always best to feel comfortable with your mechanics choice of these noises. And check the fluid in the power steering pump resevoir. Good luck, ok It does have quite a few miles on it.
