Hand me down van, runs well, no engine lights etc on but the van (I'm assuming it's the trans) makes a strange sound after shifting up or down. I can only describe it as the sound of a thimble on a washboard sort of a creak. It seems to be shifting fine, though being this is my first vehicle I cannot be sure, no obvious thumps, jerks etc.
I have heard many other old vans give the same creak as a pedestrian....
I did have a leaking/rotted trans pan replaced a couple of months ago, but the creak has been there all along and continues.
Any ideas?

Thanks for your time.

Chrysler transmission will make a clicking sound when they are shifted into gear and when downshifting. Is that what you are hearing?

I can't really say it's a click, unless it's an extended click...it's a repeated sound, lasts two or three seconds. Think like a zipper sound on an old jacket but slower.
Of course this is the difficulty in describing sounds, lol. My click could be your thump.

I agree. What one thinks another thinks differently. To be honest, as I described, they do make a clicking sound that will last a couple seconds. Based on our conversation, I think what you are hearing is normal for that transmission.

Let me know if you have other questions.
