check the relay in the power ditribution center under the hood on drivers side. also if you have a test light hook it up to the horn lead, press the horn, does it light? if yes the horn needs to be changed...check horn fuse in the car...

99 Dodge Caravan, 172000 miles, 2.4L - 4 cyl

I have checked the horn switch & it indicates working. Switched horn relay with adjacent relay, no horn. Checked fuses, no bad fuses. Pulled horn, horn works. No power to horn. Any ideas?

PS: Airbag and low wash indicator lights have been on for several weeks. No obvious problems under steering wheel cover.

The clockspring item in the airbag is covered by safety recall BTW. If you bring it in to the dealer they will fix it at no cost. I had all of these wrong with my 1998 town and country - when I brought it in to them they cleared out all of the error codes and everything started working again - horn, cruise controls, brake light went off, etc.

I believe the horn on this year is mounted near the radiator. Check to make sure you didn't disconnect it while working on the starter. Also, if it is connected, check to see if there is power to it when the horn is pressed.

Let me know. Also, let me know if the air bag light is on.

My Airbag light is always on and my horn and cruise control don't work, are these all related to one problem or is it 3 seperate problems?

I had the same problem though I don't know if the cruise control worked or not. The problem is a switch in the steering wheel. You can't do it yourself because of the danger of the air bag going off. Parts and labor is about $300.

All stopped at the same time. Do these three items share a common connector? I believe all the fuses are OK. The airbag light is ON on the dash, the cruise control will not show any indications, and the horn doesn't work.

Can I do this myself, and/or need special tools?

Also, why would the clockspring stop the cruise control and horn from working? Just curious?

The connection between the steering wheel and the car has been left unplugged most likely. Removing the upper and lowe column covers wit a phillips head screwdriver you will see just behind the steering wheel, sticking out on the drivers side, a place for a wiring connection to plug in and probably a wire connection not fully seated of just dangling.

If it is plugged in then you have a clock spring failure that requires removing the air bag first. If you must replace this let me know and I'll send you the safety procedure to disarm it.

Good Luck,

Clockspring is located behind steering wheel.
Position wheels in straight ahead position.
Remove air bag module retaining screws from rear of steering wheel. Lift air bag module from steering wheel, and disconnect electrical connector from air bag module, horn switch and speed control switches. Remove air bag module. Using Puller (C3428B), remove steering wheel.
Remove steering column shrouds.
Disconnect 2-way and 4-way connectors between clockspring and instrument panel wiring harness.
Remove clockspring from housing assembly by depressing 2 tabs on side of clockspring. Clockspring cannot be repaired and must be replaced if faulty.

Welcome to the forum, there is a horn relay in the power distribution center, under the hood. Use a testlite on the relay terminals, with relay unplugged, two terminals should be hot all the time. In the same electrical box, fuse 20--20 amp is for the horn.

The problem is usually the wiring circuit in the steering column, maybe you'll get lucky and it's just a fuse?

That means you likely have a bad clockspring in the steering column. Chrysler had a recall on many of the caravans for this so i suggest you contact the dealer to see if your vehicle is covered.

I have a 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan SE with 156,000 miles on it. Recently, several problems seemed to start about the same time. The airbag light began staying lit, the speed control would not activate, and the horn does not work. Is there any possibility these problems are connected, or are there three separate problems?
Also, is the radiator thermostat easily replaceable? I found out that the air filter surely wasn't.

Oh come on , how bad can a simple air filter be? :P
Engineers would never put somthing so important ia a totally inaccessible place.

And you want to go after an air bag light huh?

Start by pulling codes, I have a feeling your looking at a aibag clockspring, but it's early yet. You are looking for a DTC called DRIVER SQUIB CIRCUIT OPEN.

There is a high resistance condition in the base of the clockspring.
The good news is that there is a safety recall on this regardless of miliege :D

Call the dealer for an appt, after confirming this with service

I did replace air filters on doge caravan in the past; you must have very small hands to get out the clips.
Just difficult to access, because too narrow.
Engineers may have small hands that time :-)

Test the power leads at the battery with a meter or test light. There are fusible links there and you may have disturbed a borderline one when doing the air filter

My airbag light has always come on intermittenly once in a blue moon. Recently my horn stopped working and then I noticed that all my cruise control buttons have stopped working as well. I checked my fusebox and noticed there was none marked horn. I then checked all the clear fuses and none were blown. How do you check the other fuses/relays and do you think it might be one of them?

Thanks---Kerry M. Willis

Hi:

It could be a fuse. In the owner's manual, it should list and identify all fuses. If that doesn't help, locate the horn, and with a test light, see if it is getting power. If it is, replace it. Also, under the hood there is a power distribution box. Check there if anthing is bad. The relays are located there too.

Thanks to the reply on the clock spring because it was under recall and now the horn works, the cruise works and the air bag light doesn't stay on anymore. However I still am having problems with it dying on me. Sometimes not for a few days other times frequently in a 1 day period. Sometimes it dies in idle mode other times when I'm slowing down. it always starts right up, but boy is it frustrating, any ideas?

could be the crank or cam position sensor. do you smell fuel at start up? if so, there is also a recall on the fuelrail leaking. this would cause it to get to much air. if i can think of anything else i wil post...vandragon

Nope! No fuel smell on start up or any other time. Also there are times where the check engine light will come on briefly while i'm driving and when it does the engine "hits hard" and lunges. It might do it once or 3 or 4 times. Light never stays on and when it does that the "hitting hard" it kicks off the cruise control
