1998 Dodge Caravan ignition lock switch

My van runs great. I got home from work 2 nights ago and parked the van. Yesterday morning, I'm ready to go to work and put the key into the ignition. The key goes all the way in, but can't get it to turn any which way. I thought the key was bent, so i used my spare key. The same results. The key does not turn. The steering wheel does not lock. Can anyone please let me know what the problem might be and how to repair it.

I have the same model & year Caravan, and have had a similar issue. Though am not a mechanic and haven't actually had it repaired yet due to tight funds, I was advised to put some graphite powder on the key and then insert the key & jiggle it a little and most of the time (for me) it will loosen things up and the key will turn and I'm good to go! I know my keys are bent somewhat as I realize I'm always in a hurry & not pulling the key out straight, but just thought I'd tell you about this (possible) temporary fix.

Thanks for your reply. I found my Haynes manual and it told me what to do. It states that you have to put your key in and turn it to the run position and use a screw driver to push in on the lip and the cylinder will come out. My problem was that the key would not turn, so I took a plier and screw driver and hit the lip and then the key turned and then the cylinder came out. I hear you on the FUNDS ISSUE. I'm an electrician, business is dead. Autozone has it listed for $14.99. I will check it out tomorrow. In the mean time I did what you said about the graphite, and it's working.
