WAY too much information!
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is mounted to the inner fender next to the battery. It takes all the sensor readings and switch inputs, then decides when to fire the coil(s). and injector(s). The main trigger pulse comes from the crankshaft pickup coil which lives in, . . . well, . . . depending on which engine you have:
4 cylinder: it's in the distributor, easy disc to replace, and is a very common failure item.
6 cylinder 3.0L: dual optical pickup in the distributor; very low failure rate.
6 cylinder 3.3L and 3.8L: crankshaft position sensor bolted to the upper rear of the transmission bell housing. This one can be a little difficult to find unless you know where to look. Word of warning though. The air gap is critical so don't just yank it out unless you plan on replacing it. New ones come with a paper disc stuck on the end to set the gap. This disc will slide off when the engine is cranked.
