About a hour ago the chceck engine light came on, it is steady not flashing.

Last month my daughter wrecked the car and the battery was disconnected while the shop repaired it. Could that be part of the problem?
I am a handicapped person living on a small disability payment and can't afford to pay for a engine repair. is it in danger of blowiing up?

Disconnecting the battery is not the reason for the check engine light. What I suggest that you do is to bring the vehicle to the nearest Autozone and have them scan the computer. Record the code numbers and report back. We'll help you diagnose.
