Transmission problem
1998 Dodge Avenger 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

the codes read gears 1-4 incorrect ratio, and input shaft/speed sensor circut. i've changed the speed sensors, and am at a loss as to what to do.

Symptoms: it doesn't shift up or down at the right speeds, and sometimes goes into limp mode, and won't shift at all.

If you have replaced both, and still have trouble it may be internal. The pressures required to apply the different bands and servos are very suceptible to filter and proper fluid levels.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, wait 15 minutes.
2. Start and let it heat up.
3. After the engine and transmission are at full operating temperatures, put the car in nuetral and make sure the level is ok. Smell, and look at it's condition. If it is clear and smells ok, check both fuse panels and then you know you have done all you can. You'll need service with a professional scan tool. This will give a better idea. It may have a torque converter or internal seal problem.
If you have just serviced the trans, it may have been filled in Park. Read your owners manual, it is usually checked in Nuetral, a 1 and a half quart difference, because of the transmission cooler.
A scanner can moniter the input and output rpms and may show a problem and the sensors were correct. ok
