Hi, my car was having a problem and was making allot of noise so I brought it in. The dealer said that my front left lower lateral arm needed to be replaced. Dodge has a recall on this part of the car. Can I take advantage of it, and if so, how? (My dealer was going to charge me $375)

Recall ID # 00V421002 - SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT
Recall Date: DEC 18, 2000
Component: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT
Model Affected: AVENGER
Potential Units Affected: 393796
Recall Date: DEC 18, 2000

Model Affected:
1998 DODGE AVENGER

Summary:
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. IF THE RUBBER BOOTS ON THE LOWER LATERAL ARM BALL JOINTS OF THE FRONT SUSPENSION WERE DAMAGED DURING ASSEMBLY, DIRT AND WATER CAN INTRUDE. ALSO, MMC HAS ADDED THE POTENTIAL OF LEAKING MOISTURE, WHICH CAN CAUSE THE BALL STUD TO CORRODE.

Consequence:
THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE LOWER LATERAL ARM BALL JOINT TO SEPARATE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH. THIS CAMPAIGN SUPERCEDES MMC'S PREVIOUS SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN, SEE 99V-066.

Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE LOWER LATERAL ARM BALL JOINT FOR WEAR. BALL JOINTS THAT EXHIBIT WEAR BEYOND THE ESTABLISHED TOLERANCE WILL BE REPLACED WITH NEWLY DESIGNED LATERAL ARM BALL JOINTS. BALL JOINTS THAT ARE WITHIN THE ESTABLISHED TOLERANCE WILL BE CLEANED AND A SPECIAL SEALANT WILL BE APPLIED TO PREVENT INTRUSION OF MOISTURE.

Potential Units Affected:
393796

If you were the original owner the recall would have been mailed to you.
If other owner had recall performed already, no. Chrysler would do alot for customers though and if you talk directly to them maybe they'll pay for part. So it is a 3 way deal between your dealer, Chrysler, and yourself. Remember recalls are for safety and it was an inspection. 9 years 130,000 miles? Good luck. Pay it, keep reciept and wait for Mopfiat. At least it will be driveable and safe. The selling dealer has all the info on the recall and which vehicles were checked.ok

I kind of thought that I would not be able to take advantage of their recall, but you can never be too sure.

It doesn't hurt to ask.
Many times a car would come in out of warranty mileage. If it was a repair common, but not a recall, that mileage would change. I just didn't think it was fair over a couple thousand miles, but I have seen dealers and Chrysler buy many cars back. Your car is so great, a recall was so rare. Well take it easy for now. OK asdgq9
