1997 Dodge Avenger

besides the smell of gasoline inside of my car all the time, every once in awhile while im driving the car it will die on me and will not restart till it has sat turned off for a few minutes. i had the fuel filter changed and that didnt seem to cure the problem of the smell or the car dieing on me. any ideas of what may be going on and how to fix the problem?

Hi there, i would be checking the fuel system of a leak as the fumes may well be getting drawn into the cabin by the ventilation system, this may also be the cause of tour starting problems as well, start here.

im a woman useing my husbands name he passed away and dont want mechanics taking me for money...well it is scarry for me... i will be doing 45 miles an hour and the car will just die on me and after sitting for 5 minutes it will start back up. plus all the smell of gasoline inside and outside of the car scares me too that it might catch on fire. i had the fuel filter changed, but still have the problem, so where do i start first, where do i have a mechanic look first so i sound inteligent and might now what im talking about. Hi there,

Ask your mechanic to inspect the fuel system for leaks, and also the purge system for function, as for the engine cutting out, i would get the ECU scanned for any unresolved fault codes, you may or may not have a check light on, you don't always get this light with all codes, ask for these relatively simple & quick checks to be done first.
