Can't tell when we can't hear what it sounds like. Most professionals will listen to various points with a stethoscope. The power steering pump is a common source of a whine.

I had a similar problem in my 96 avenger. One day i heard a almost whining noise so i just left it cause the car still ran fine. Figured it was maybe a belt or something. As the days passed it got louder and louder till it was loud enough to hear in my hose as it warmed up. Then all the sudden on my way to work one morning it wouldn't go into second gear. So I limped it home and called my buddy to ask him if he had room in the garage to drop my transmission. He said it was cool so we pulled it out and the tranny filter was so clogged with debris it wouldnt even drain out. So i purchased a new one and we replaced it and the sqeeling stoped.. I'm not saying thats it but if nothing else check it out it cant hurt and its easy . good luck and i hope this helps

What did you replace? The transmission or the filter?

The filter I replaced and the noise went away. The tranny pump must of been what was making the noise or something because it was no longer noisy at all. Sorry I wrote this post and the last in a hurry sorry for the confusion.

Very interesting. Gonna have to add that one to the memory banks before oldtimer's disease sets in. Thank you for the information.
