My car feels like the central differential lock is engaged when no button to switch it on is pressed, it jerks around a corner and just locks the wheels almost completely at a very low speed, but when I press the button to engage the differential lock then the car drives like it normally should with no problems around corners at all. I tried jacking up the wheels and when it is switched off the wheels are locked but when it is switched on the wheels turn individually.

Unfortunately, we do not have a manual on this vehicle so it is hard to know for sure what is happening but it sounds like the transfer case motor is remaining engaged.

Just to be clear, when you lifted the vehicle they seemed to work in the opposite position. Meaning when the system is turned off or in 2WD, all 4 wheels spin? then when it is in 4WD it operates like in 2WD?

Let us know if this is the case and at that point we can try to view a similar vehicle like a Toyota 4 Runner to see if we can figure this out. Thanks

I managed to find the problem, I had the head gasket done and ever since then the problem was there. I took a look at the vacuum lines which they have disconnected to disassemble and reassemble the engine and they swapped two vacuum lines around. I just swapped them back and now it is perfect.

That is great info. Thanks for coming back and updating us as I am sure that info will help others. It is great to know this is a vacuum operated system so that clearly makes perfect sense.

Thanks again for using 2CarPros.
