Codes p0430 and p0420

Hi,

Looking at the second picture, it indicates there is one monitor that is incomplete. That needs to be indicating, "ok".

The incomplete monitor should reset via driving the vehicle. If you had the battery disconnected or the codes cleared, the system has to complete a drive cycle to show complete on all monitors.

What about the X next to the cat on the first pic? Is that the one is incomplete? And can you tell me what means when i have numbers next to pddtc and dtc? Can i pass inspection with those showing any numbers? Thank you, ev

I live in PA. We are allowed to have one monitor not complete and still pass the test. Ask your tech to see if that is the case in NJ. Explain that you have one incomplete monitor which hasn't reset. Ask if it still will pass or if they all need to be complete.

If they all need complete, it is just a matter of you continuing to drive the vehicle and checking it to see when it's done. I have actually had to drive vehicles a total of 200 miles for that monitor. They can be stubborn.

Take a look at what I just found:

A vehicle of model year 1996-2000 is permitted to have two non-continuous monitors not ready and still pass the readiness portion of the OBD test. A vehicle of model year 2001 or newer is only permitted to have one non- continuous monitor not ready.Jan 29, 2020

Oh, okay. one more question based on the images i sent. can i pass inspection with 2 pddpc codes?

Hi,

The PD DTC indicates permanent codes. They can't be removed by clearing them with a scanner or disconnecting the battery.

With that being said, are there any diagnostic trouble codes indicated on the scan tool? They could be old codes that aren't relevant or still could be. I'm not sure if you checked for codes in general or if you just went to the IM readiness on the scan tool. When looking at the pics you attached, it appears the MIL (check engine light) is not on and there are 0 codes. Under those conditions, it should pass.

As far as monitors, you can pass with one still incomplete. Let me know if there are other codes that you know of.

Before i had p0430 and p0420. I was adding cataclean for few months and i getting different readings every time i scan it. It's getting better readings though. I had also oil leak kn one of my o2 sensors that i have to replace i just replaced engine oil pan but the guy i went to didn't replaced the 02 sensor at the same time long story. thank you, ev

Good morning,

With 2 active codes, it will not pass emission.

Code 420 and 430 are for catalytic converter failure. In most cases, it needs to be replaced, the codes cleared and a drive cycle to set the monitors again.

I attached the location and the procedure for replacing the cats. Once it is done and the codes cleared, the drive cycle must be performed and all monitors set.

But my engine light is not on though? I know i pass inspection with 2 codes in NJ before it was years ago. i don't remember the codes though. My other question is, it says that the car is ready for emission based on green light o nthe images or not? Thank you

The monitors are set, yes. You have one not set. The light is not on so when they do the plug and play, it will only show the 1 monitor not set. That is allowed by New Jersey.

I would take it to a testing station for your test. You should be good.

You only have one monitor not set. That Is okay.

There are no active DTC as it says to the reader.

That means you are good to go for the inspection.

PPdc is pending codes and DTC is current or active codes.

Green checks mean they are good and ready to go.

The codes are inactive at the moment. They will become hard codes at some point and turn on the light.
