Engine Mechanical problem
1993 Daihatsu Charade 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic
----------------------------------------------------------------
I am working on a 1300cc Charade, which I've rebuilt the head, & replaced a piston, because of nut being dropped down the plug tube. The engine now purrs like a kitten, untill an intermittent rattle starts in the top of the engine. I have reset the tappets & checked the timing. Plugs are very light grey. Sound may last a couple of seconds to half a minute, then stops. You can rev the engine & it runs great. Then the knock comes back, & sometimes the engine will even stall at idle. Would greatly appreciate any advice & help. Thanks.

Hi bsas2,

The engine stalling might not be related with the knocking noise. Check the idling, tuning and timing.

Whereas as to the knocking noise, is the noise present when revving the engine?

If no, then the rockershafts, tappet screws and valve tip needs to be checked for wear.

Thanks for your reply. I removed the head, & the piston has been clipping the head on No1 cylinder. There was a small amount of damage done to that port by the previous fault, but it was dressed up, to ensure the piston would clear, but it looks like the slight change to the chamber, is throwing the piston slightly out of ballance, under compression, just enough to allow continued contact. Looks like I will have to have the port reconditioned. Thanks again for your help!
