Engine problem
1999 Daewoo Nubira Engine Size unknown Two Wheel Drive Manual 84300 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
i commute to office by my car and having issues espescially in the return journey. Engine goes idle sometimes on the run when I slow or lower down the gear. I also get the check (service) symbol in the panel just before the ignition goes off. The speedometer also stops working sometimes and resumes suddenly. I just took the car from service and the service guy said that there were no issues with the car.

Any help wud be appreciated.

thanks.

If the speedo is intermittent, it will mess with the PCM, which will try to compensate with the engine and trans.Start by having the PCM scanned (check engine light) this will most likely give us a starting point.Autozone will scan it for free

the tell tale that i see first of all is the speedo dropping then resuming. id double check the connections at the battery and the grounds at the engine block. also when car is running slowly wiggle the key is the ignition and see if this changes anything, you sould have a partially burnt ignition switch.

the strange thing with the car is that the problem occurs only during the night journey. Whenever the engine goes off, I wiggle the keys and it resumes until I slow down again.

the speedometer and engine going off problems started at the same time last week, so are they related?
Since its occuring only in the evening and night times and that too only temporarily, is it connected to headlight because I switch on the headlights only in the night?
What all should be checked PCM, battery, etc?

thanks in advance.

Isn't the ignition switch used only for starting and switching of the engine, how does it intefere with the engine and speedo when the car is on the run?

thanks

I stopped using the music player in the car since yesterday and I have not had the issue again. Does this still refer to ignition switch because of short circuit or something?

you could be reducing the amount of draw through the switch.

i took it to a service again. the porblem couldnt be reproduced but it had happened twice in this week although not as frequently as it had happened before.
the service guy suggested that key sensor may not be reading the code in the key correctly and that might have to be replaced (immobilizer technology?)

my question again is why does this not happen regularly and happens only once in 3 days!

I dont have a good answer for that one.... Electrical problems can be the hardest to find due to the intermittent nature of them

it cant be a immobilizer problem. once the password is accepted and engine is running anything after that is not theft system related. i bet your going to find the ignition switch is the culprit. keep us posted.

i took it to a different service center this time who diagnised with the plugin daewoo computer.
There error that came up on the screen was "fault with speed sensor". The service guy then cleared the error and reset all the controls and asked me to get back if I face the issue again.

Its been 2 days and no issues so far. (this issue was anyways not happening always earlier). I hope there wuldnt be any issues again but wondering whether the reset would have helped?

well unfortunately you are still going to have the problem, clearing the code did not fix anything. i would while having the headlights on gently wiggle the ignition key and see if you can make the condition happen, i think your going to find that it is going to be ignition switch related. when you turn the key to run all the current is then running through the ignition switch. hope this helps.

you were right. faced the problem again. the speedometer indicator first dropped and then resumed and after
a while it went idle again.
When it went idle the engine goes off whenever I reduce speed.
Would speed sensor be the cause of the problem?

it could be the speed sensor. i would definitely look closely at the wiring harness, because it seems to be when engine is shifting(letting off gas or giving gas)the problem occurs, when this happens the harness could be chafing.**these wires are very tiny. look closely at the wires that go into the speedo sensor to see if the wires might be broken inside the wire insulation.
