Engine Performance problem

Just bought this car and had been told it was sitting for about 1 year. Oil light came on after driving for about 40 miles. Took it to mechanic that said the oil was thin because of sitting so long and pressure was extremely low. Changed oil and filters. Pressure was back up. Picked up car, drove 2 miles home and oil light came on again. The engine sounds good for high mileage car except for ticking on top of engine. There are NO oil leaks at all. Could it be the oil pump or something else to have checked before jumping into a rebuild on the engine? Any suggestions?
