Noises problem

Hello,
I have a strange knocking sound coming from my front left wheel area when I drive over a bump or hole in the road. There are no problems when driving normally but as soon as I hit a bump or pothole particularly at low speeds there is a popping sound from the front wheel. It has been suggested to me that this could be the CV Joint. Does anyone have any ideas and will this problem need immediate attention or am I in no great danger at this stage allowing me to save some money for repairs.
