CVT transmission makes a scraping/bearing, whining noise

The CVT scrapping or whining noise is the steel belt inside the unit and the bearing the pulley rides on. Unfortunately a software update will not fix this.

Clearly I have not heard the noise but this is a common enough complaint to know the repair is typically a replacement unit. Most places don't rebuild these units because the cost is about the same to replace and rebuild. Plus there are limited parts available to rebuild them.

The only other possible cause is if the unit is low on fluid. I attached the process to check the fluid. It is not the easiest process but we need to make sure it is full.

Which TCM should I have used? The old one or the one that came with the used transmission.

You would use the one from your vehicle and not the one out of the other vehicle. The only thing you need to have done is erase what is called the EEPROM data in the TCM. Basically this is the learned data as it is driven and when you install a new unit you don't want to operate the new unit on the old unit's data. This could effect the drive-ability but most likely will not cause a noise.

Again, I suspect this is an issue with the unit and not just a programming issues even though this should be done, I don't think it will correct your issue.
