CV axle or CV joint broke

Hello,

It looks like the CV axle / shaft is what broke. All you will need is to replace the CV axle.
The CV axle can be replaced in a relatively short period of time with some basic hand tools. It will need to have the vehicle on a jack stand and few components needs to be removed.

Those CV axles goes for around $75.00. As for the installation in a shop it will depend on their labor rate and how many hours they charge you.

One thing to add, that part that failed is the inner tripot joint, however I would check the other parts of the suspension as well, reason being these are designed to slide in and out when the suspension moves, they have extra motion so that they don't come apart like this has. Something allowed that side to travel farther than it should, and the axle came apart. I would check the front strut and other parts to be sure none of those are broken or failed. As SQM says replacing the complete axle is faster and usually much faster than just replacing the joint. Just be sure you get the correct one, GM made a lot of vehicles that used the same parts but with different shafts depending on the vehicle's width and suspension travel. Using one that was shorter than it should be may have been the cause of this failure.
