Hi,

I will be happy to help, but I need to know what we are working on. The challenger wasn't made in 1961, I need an engine size, and exactly what you mean by a cut out relay. Are you referring to a voltage regulator? Also, if the points are frozen and don't move, the engine won't run. So, I'm not sure what is actually is happening.

Please let me know the year, make, model, and engine size and specifically what is happening.

Let me know,
Joe

Hi, there was no category for antique or classic cars, there should be. Hopefully you or someone can help
me. I have.a 1938 American Bantam. It's not a voltage regulator, but a cut out regulator, similar but not the same. It sits on top.of a generator. Someone told me to.jump.the terminals on the cut out, There was a big spark I believe that was a big mistake, now all the car does is click when I turn the key. The battery is good and so are the connection. I need your help to get the car - generator and cut out working again. See photo.

Thank you,

Kenny

Kenny,

I have to be honest, I'm not familiar with this vehicle. However, what connections did you cross? Also, it the cut-out something that can be replaced?

Hi,

Glad to hear you got things working. How was it repaired? Also, I will make the suggestion to the owner for antique vehicles. I like the idea myself.

Take care,
Joe

Joe, hi, not sure what's going on with the generator, it may just need to be rebuilt.
The reason for the car not starting was a totally separate issue. The condenser was the problem.

Thanks for the help.

Joe,
I checked the wires, could not find anything so far. When I turn the lights on the gauge goes negative, as it should. Gauge does not show charging battery, no positive.reading, only negative. Battery not charging. do you have any other ideas?

Thank you, Kenny

Hi, Kenny,

Where are you checking to confirm the battery isn't charging? Is it at the battery or at the generator? Also, please confirm if this is a 6 volt system.

Thanks,
Joe

Joe,

I'm checking at the battery with a volt meter, voltage does not change when I increase speed. I get a little over 6 volts from the terminals on each side of the voltage cutout. Again, I'm not getting a reading on the voltage gauge.

Thanks,
Kenny

Kenny, I wish I was more knowledgeable on this vehicle. If you are getting no power from either side of the cut out, to me (and this is theory) it sounds like the generator is bad. You should see an increase in voltage at power in on the cut out. I suspect the cut out relay simply prevents overcharging just like a regulator. For it to regulate power, there needs to be something to regulate, and it sounds like it isn't there.

Not being there with you makes this even more difficult for me. However, in theory you should see higher voltage on the input of the cut off relay. If there isn't to me it sounds like a bad generator.

Let me know if that makes sense. I'm trying... LOL

Joe, Hi I removed the Generator, it has seen better days. It's going to be rebuilt, hopefully parts can be located. Do you know of any Generator rebuilder's who are inexpensive and have experience with these old generators?

Thank you,

Kenny

You are very welcome, Kenny. You are the second person that posted questions on this type of vehicle (at least the 2nd one I got). I've seen pics of them. Really a unique vehicle. I understand why you want it running.

Take care and if you have a chance, let me know if rebuilding the generator takes care of the issue.

Take care of yourself.
