Trying to change my oil pump and timing chain. Only issue is the crankshaft pulley refuses to come off. I bought the Lisle puller remover for 3800 GM engines but the bolts that come with it are too small. What size bolts should I use? I've included a picture of the pulley.

Good evening,

There are 2 pulleys.

One uses 6 mm bolts and one uses 8 mm bolts.

From the picture, I would say you have the 6 mm bolts.

You will need to put the puller in place and measure the distance.

It all depends on the type of puller you are using.

I'm using the lisle GM harmonic balancer removal tool. I think it's like 45300 (the part number). I'll check a little later...

I was using a SnapOn puller and I needed 2 1/2 inch long bolts.

Now here is the real question: should I leave the bolt on, just screwed in a little bit or take it off?

It depends on the puller. if you have the adapter with the shape of the V at the end, you can remove the bolt as the V will not contact the threads.

Otherwise, leave the bolt in a couple of threads.
