crankshaft rear main oil seal

I am changing the rear main seal on the engine (L24 - 6 cylinder). The original seal body is thicker than the new seal body - meaning that if I put the new seal in, it will recess deeper in the main seal area. The actual sealing part of the seal fits properly on the crankshaft and the outer seal dimension fits properly in place too. I have searched for the dimension thickness of the seals that are available, and they seem to be all the same as the new seal I have.
My concern is - Is it ok for the new seal to be recessed in further (or to have a space behind the seal if it is installed flush with outer surface of the rear crankshaft) as opposed to the original seal? The original seal is .500" thick, and the new one is .375" thick.

what part don't you understand? parts on vehicles have design changes through the years and this may be what has been done on your part. if you are so worried about your car then have a pro do it for you so you have some typ of warranty. If you would also actually search the internet you would find that rock auto has a seal manufactured by national that is a 1/2" wide.as long as it fits tight you shold be ok so it won't come out. here's apic of the seal
