I was driving home from work last week when my check engine light came on
So I took my car in to the dealer and they told me that I need to replace my engine; funny thing is they has just told me a few months before that I should
Get at least 300,000 miles out of the car due to it
Being in great condition. I was so shocked when they dropped that news on me so I decided to get A second opinion.
I took the car to sears and the mechanic told me the only code that came up was for the crankshaft position sensor. Shocked again; I was very confused as to why Toyota would say replace the engine if I can just replace the sensor. Can you tell me the location of the sensor for a 2008 Solara 2.4L and offer any advice on what options I have besides replacing the engine for $6000.00

Does the car run all the time or does it not start sometimes? What are the symptoms your having? Also do you know the exact code number it is?I would need a lot more info why the dealer told you to replace the engine.

That code is usually a bad crankshaft position sensor but I would inspect the wires and connector going to it.To test it you would have to test it when it was failing. If It was my car I would try inspecting the wiring and connector if all looks good then replace the sensor.

I took my car to the mechanic and the car is burning excessive oil! Will replacing the crankshaft position sensor correct this problem or will I still need to
Replace the engine?

OK that makes sense why they told you that you need a new engine. No replacing the crankshaft position sensor will not stop the oil burning.
