You do not have to stop the engine in any certain position before replacing the crank position sensor.
It does simply pull out of the hole. However, in order to replace the crank sensor, you will first have to remove the starter. Then the new sensor will have to be programmed after installation.

I have attached the crank sensor replacement procedure as well as the re-learning process and the starter removal below for your reference. Keep in mind that the programming or re-learning process does require a scan tool to perform.
