Coolant temperature sensor location

It looks like the engine coolant sensor is in the middle of the cylinder head upper. Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

I cannot find, we are talking about c-max 1.8 tdi 2007.

We don't have information on the TDI in the states sorry.

My 1.8tdci 2007 focus c-max overheats when pulling my caravan up steep hills (normal hills okay). If i pull up the bigger hills gently, say 30 mph in third using hardly any throttle, no problems. Rest of time, hitched up or solo, no problems at all. Now the thing is, i have never ever heard the cooling fan working, except with A/C engaged, and then only very slowly. If i open the bonnet at the end of a run with caravan on, top and bottom hoses are extremely hot, but absolutely no fan and gauge is sat at half way as per normal. caravan is about 1100kg.

there isn't a temperature sensor in the rad, all done by engine management by a sensor on the cylinder head. the fan cuts in through 4 stages.

Yep, I would replace the temperature sensor first. Do you have any check engine lights on? The fan should come on when the engine is hot. This guide should help:
