2001 Honda Civic Coupe. Never had problems with this car until now, except it does leak oil.
- Car overheated - stalled when stopped and would not restart. Opened hood and engine smoking.
- Mechanic said radiator has large crack, needs new radiator replaced. Shop said needs other maintenance repairs brakes etc. Did that, spent a lot of money.
- Few days later car pouring out fluid from under hood of car. Seemed related to very recent radiator install. Shop said water pump failed as have been driving with cracked radiator exerting low pressure and new radiator would cause water pump to fail at the proper pressure. Said need new pump. Installed new water pump. Said should do timing belt at same time. Spent more money.
- Few weeks later, car heater blowing cold air, engine light came on , (drove about fifteen minutes on highway) the car stalled at red light and would not restart. Opened hood and fluid spewing out everywhere. Radiator reserve cap missing (blown off) and plastic was melted under metal radiator cap. Put some fluid in and car did restart, just drove two minutes off road to safe place.
- Shop said radiator cracked on top (said this seems "strange" ) and will replace as under warranty. They replaced radiator again and said car will be ready for pick up in forty minutes. Called me ten to fifteen minutes later and said car was overheating in a test and problem is the "head gasket. "
- Original problem - car overheating, spent $2,000.00 on car (including some unrelated maintenance), six weeks later car overheating and not driveable. I said would not this be a head gasket issue to begin with? They said "probably, but there would be no way of knowing at the time".
- Would not have put money into this old car if diagnosed with head gasket to begin with as this is pricey repair. "No way of knowing " before , but there is way of knowing the third time brought car in? I feel they did not perform necessary tests to properly diagnose root of cooling system problem. Why replace radiator again if problem is head gasket? I am just a layperson, but this situation does not sit well with me. Spent a lot of money and now have no functioning car. Radiator blew up two times is it worth replacing gasket? Worried about other engine damage. Any advice appreciated! Thanks! :)
