Code P1780

I took my car for emissions test the other day and it failed with a code p1780. The car starts the only problem with that at all. I ordered a new neutral safety switch I am going to replace that today. How can I tell before I start this if that is the problem ? It is an older car and I am sure it has not been replaced in a long time and there is a lot of play in the gear shifter. Any kind of help would be appreciated. thank you.

On that last post I meant to put I have no problem with starting car. Also, do I need to have the car in park or in neutral safety switch?

Thanks for the help. I just got done taking off the NSS. Cleaning everything up inside of the plug and the outside of it.

Pu5 the new switch in. It's running better, it's shifting better, and the check engine light went out. I just hope it stays out.

Park/Neutral Position Switch Malfunction

That is for an automatic trans only.

the park neutral safety switch is malfunctioning
It means you should replace your gas pedal immediately!
