Could this be related to the transmission? Car now would only go into reverse all of a sudden.

Hi,
Did the check engine light turn on at the same time the problem started? I ask because this code is related to the vehicle speed sensor circuit. So, to answer your question, it could be related, but usually when there is a sensor-related issue, it doesn't prevent the vehicle from moving forward.
Is the transmission fluid both clean and full? Does anything happen when you place it in drive? Does the gear indicator show that it is in drive?
