Code P0016?

Hi,

The idea that it started with the new one does lead me to think it is the sensor itself. I have seen so many inexpensive aftermarket parts (specifically electrical) fail

On the other hand, check to make sure the connector pins at the sensor are both clean, tight, free of corrosion, and not damaged in any way.

As far as the timing chain and possible oil dirt contamination, if it has been serviced on a regular basis, it's unlikely. If the oil was not changed on a regular basis and became extremely dirty, it could be either the chain or dirt causing the issue. However, in this case, I don't feel it is the chain because I feel you would have more than one code.

Check that and let me know if you find anything.

I have seen the camshaft actuator or oil control valve go out and cause this problem, Also, I would remove the oil control valve to see if it is clogged, here is the location of the oil control valve. Please check the engine oil and change it if it is dirty which can cause the camshaft actuator not to work. The oil control valve will have a screen on the end of it which is where the clog can occur.

Drain and refill including oil filter :
4.0 L (1.06 U.S.gal., 4.23 U.S.qt., 3.52 lmp.qt.)
Install the oil filler cap.

Start engine and check for oil leaks and check the oil gauge or light for an indication of oil pressure.
Recheck the engine oil level.

If the engine oil is clean and full and the oil control valves are okay, then suspect the camshaft actuators. Check out the images (below). Please upload pictures or videos in your response to the problem so we can see what's going on.

Hy Ken, I have a couple questions. first thanks for all your awesome help. you enclosed 2 pics, bank one and bank 2 are both those oil valves? Yes, we had dirty oil, and it was low. Also, where are the cam actuators? I’m a bit confused. Are the actuators the same as CAM sensors? I'm going to try and clean the oil valve. We changed the oil, and the car is much better. please explain. I see one pic is of CVVT oil valve but what is bank 2 picture of? Thank you so much!

The cam actuators are inside the engine on the front of the camshafts, so that is different repair. I would clean the oil control valve and change the oil and filter to see what happens, also clear the codes. Here is an image of them so you know what I am talking about. Check out the images (below).

Thank you so much for all your help. i can’t touch those cam actuators. Too big of a job, but we changed oil, it was low and really dirty. I replaced the cam sensors with aftermarket ones, and the poo16 code cleared when i erased it but the car bucked and misfired. I’m getting an OEM rear cam sensor tomorrow, so I will replace that. i put the old original cam sensors back in so the car would run better and the check engine light came back on again. My OBD reader says: cam/crank correlation whatever that means. Seems like a problem with that rear car. However, the two original pics you sent. Those were the oil (intake and exhaust VVT valves? I will try to clean those. thank you so much. There is a recall on that car for some rod in the engine and knock sensor. My best you guys are awesome! PS; we changed oil it was really low and dirty.

CAM/crank correlation is a problem with the camshaft position which can be the sensor or the control valves or the camshaft actuators themselves. Yes, the images I sent are for both the intake and exhaust camshafts. Start with the easier things first while clearing codes each time.

i believe the images you sent are for the oil control VVT valves? My 2 camshaft position sensors are right near each other on the same side (drivers) side engine. they have different connectors than the oil sensors.

There is only one code poo16.

Hi Ken, we changed the oil. It was really hard to start (crank) before that 2017 Hyundai Tucson SE 2.0 liter. We were getting a poo16 code and after i put an OEM cam sensors in, I'm now getting a poo17 code. weird and the car is still hard to start but runs smoothly and fine with no overheating i did not clean the oil VVT solenoids. I was afraid due to 90,000 miles they might break off. The car at dealer today for recall on engine and update knock sensor software..

Okay, that could make a difference let me know if anything changes once you get it back. If not I would check the oil control valves. Did you change the oil filter as well?

Yes, changed oil and new oil filter. throwing a P0017 code now and hard to start OEM cam sensor used, but it's at shop for recall. They will fix the engine for free or replace it said valves might be melted?
When it comes back, I'm doing brakes and oil VVT valves. I hear they are hard to remove. thank you
