Clutch pedal goes to the floor?

Recently while I was driving my car my clutch started to act weird while I was driving every day that passed as I drove it seemed to worsen there were noises as I pushed on the clutch even if it was just barely. and then the noise became a constant screeching at first it was only happening when I push the clutch pedal to shift but it got worse to where it was constant screeching noise no matter whether I had the clutch press or not. my question is, why is my clutch now down all the way to the ground and I could still lift it with my hand but it seems like it could be the cable, but I do not know a lot about a standard vehicle.
